A few of the 96's had the regulator mounted on top of the fuel pump. If it's not on the rail, then it's back there as part of the top of the pump. Most 96's were on the fuel rail. It was very limited production - some were export models.
The pressure on the 96's with the tank regulator was higher than the rail type - to stop the proverbial "heat soak." No vacuum was used. It was the forerunner of the later type.
Unfortunately replacements for those are hard to find - 97's were different yet. The 96 was unique to only some 96's.
Check with your dealer - if they search they can find it. Parts houses won't show it.

Note '96 fuel pump part number 4798941 comes with fuel pressure regulator. I think this is the first year the regulator was part of the pump. Starting in '97 the regulator was part of the regulator/filter assembly on top of the fuel pump module assembly.
'96 rail is part number 53030699, same as '97 and '98
Fuel injectors are the same for '96 thru '98, part number 53030778.
I think DefconOne is all set.

Are you really at Defcon One over there?

if my fuel regulator fail....touch wood.....
is it possible for me to get the later fuel pump and the fuel regulator on the rail......to be installed on my jeep....since it is very difficult to get the existing fuel pump assembly.
Parts here can cost a bomb....u can easily buy 5 there when u only get 1 here:-(

What was your Jeep doing before you replaced the fuel pump? My 1996 Jeep Cherokee Sport is bucking (I guess that's the only way to explain it). When it is cold or warming up it seems to only happen if I stomp on it after I have been driving for awhile it will start doing it more often even at cruising speeds, oddly enough it seems to do it more often on rough or bumpy roads. This is the way it has been since I purchased it three months ago.
Any thoughts would be great.

I think if you could find the right pump for your application (part number above) - buy it and keep it in storage until you need it. Even if the pump assembly costs big bucks, it would be cheaper than try to convert your system as discussed. You can buy the electric fuel pump (part of the module) by itself if you need to rebuild your pump module; however, if the regulator craps out you may have trouble finding one.
I did a Google search and found a few pumps out there. Check around using Ebay Australia, Google, Yahoo, or whatever search engine you can find.

Mine did have the same problem on rough or bumpy road....it end up being the coil pack socket.Start your engine and wiggle the wires. I caught the culprit when my jeep is idling...I pinched on the wires from the alternator to the coil pack. I crimp a little the brass inside the socket and so far it holds good on the coil terminals. Due to the age....I think the socket needs replacement. So far there is no more bucking.
Hope this helps.Gd luck.
