Hi all. I did post in the ZJ forum but haven't had a reply. A friend of mine is going to look at a ZJ in about 2 hours and we're wondering it there's anything worth looking closely at, any common issues that they have or prone to failing areas.
Sorry for posting here but I did try.

Is it an I6 4.0? I don't think there's anything beyond the basic stuff you'd check for any other vehicle, but I've never considered buying one - I have a buddy who loves them and he's never had any problem that couldn't have happened with an XJ or any other SUV.

It is indeed a I6 4.0. Hopefully your friends experience with them isn't a lucky one and there's not much to particularly look out for out of the ordinary. Thanks

Anytime! This dude has had at least 4 ZJ's - one I've only heard about, one he gave to a girlfriend, one he blew the transmission on (and I mean HE blew it) and one that's his DD.
All of them were dirt cheap buys.. 500, 1000, U.S. sort of things.
This guy is a great dude, awesome friend, but if you look up the word "redneck" in a dictionary, you will see his picture. The ZJ's hold up pretty darn well with some of the boneheaded stuff this guy does. He's a 16 year old trapped in a 50+ year old body and will kill a case of budweiser a day (by himself) if he's not working. So I definitely respect the ZJ model.

This one is £800, has a pretty clean MOT history and has a LPG coversion which makes these affordable over here to drive. Hopefully it holds up and goes ahead.

Well we had a look at it, not so much on the underside as it was rather wet, but it sounded great and was in great general condition inside and out. If he wants to buy it we'll have another more thorough look on the underside but it does seem solid from what we saw. Thanks all for the replies.
