Testing ignition coil

Trying to find my ignition problem. I thought if you power the coil then break the ground side connection it should discharge. I placed a spark plug into the coil wire and grounded it then broke the ground side several times. I get a spark at the ground wire itself but no spark on the plug. Same thing when turning the ignition over.
Just replaced the pickup in the distributor but that didn't fix the problem. Though maybe it was the ignition module itself, but since I can't get the coil to fire manually not sure the module is bad.
Also just now while I was working on it, I turned the ignition on while the coil was disconnected and a relay on the upper passengers firewall begain buzzing/squealing. It stops when I hook the coil connector back up. Anyone know what that relay is?
85 xj with 2.5l I4 in case that helps.
