Hello Jeep Owners,
This is my first post here. I have a 1993 Jeep Cherokee Country/ It's a 4x2 4.0L Straight Six with an automatic transmission. My engine coolant temperature gauge on the dash is not working. I decided to replace the sensor to see if that fixes it as it did for the oil pressure sensor. I am fairly new to working on my own vehicles so you'll have to spell this out for me. I bought the sensor from Advanced and am using the Haynes repair manual to walk me through it. The problem I am having is finding the stupid sensor. The picture in the manual is not helpful and neither are the instructions. I googled for pictures as well and the diagrams I have found haven't helped much either. Can anyone explain to this auto repair newbie where this d@^* sensor is at and the process for replacing it. Thanks all and please don't shoot me for being new at this.

The coolant temp sensor that controls the gauge on the dash is located at the back of the head, right by the fire wall. It screws into the head vertically. Look towards the very back of the valve cover right close to the fire wall. It will have one connector plugged into it
I have a 1999 Jeep Cherokee 4.0 and I know the temp sensor to turn the electric fan on is on the thermostat housing. I am not sure if it also sends the signal to the Temp gauge. I am Thinking that sensor is on the block.. Wait for others to chime in.. Dont' realy want to get you in the wrong direction..

I believe I have had to loosen the MAP sensor to get at the temp sender on my '93. The MAP sensor has the triangular metal top and a vacuum line going to it. Two screws hold it to the firewall and the sender is sort of under it as pointed out by mitch500.
You have the replacement sender/sensor already and that may work out to be perfectly fine. The first time I replaced mine, I used an aftermarket unit (BWD, I believe) from O'Reilly and I finally got tired of inconsistent performance. Replaced it with an OEM part from one of the mail order Chryco outlets and have been very happy with results.
I would add that other than getting to the thing, all you do is screw the old unit out and put the new one in. When I mentioned inconsistent performance, I am referring to gauge accuracy which tends to be problematic at best in our Jeeps. The only way to really know what is going on with the cooling system is with an IR thermometer or some other external device.
Get back if this doesn't solve your problem.
One last thing: parts houses have a bad habit of supplying the wrong sender type (light) for a gauge setup.

The sensor that controls the fan/ relays info to the brain is on the thermostat housing... Gauge readings are at the back of the head as I suggested in my first post.
