Check the fan clutch, and give the radiator and a/c condensor a good flushing to make sure its not plugged with dirt/bugs/etc.

If you hold a drop light behind it can you see light through it?
Typically the heating at idle and not under load is symptomatic of an air flow issue.

i will take a look again after school and see. could it be because of a pin hole in a hose or because of a lack of antifreeze by chance?

Could be an air lock internally in the engine. Water or antifreeze shouldn't matter. Both will cool the engine.
if its a renix look at the back of the head there is a sensor between #5 and #6 injectors, you can pull it out and make sure the head is not air locked.
I wouldn't pull it with it hot, give it time to cool down and bleed the pressure off the system with the radiator cap before pulling it so it doesn't spew everywhere and burn you.
If its full when you remove the sensor, coolant will immediately start to come out of the hole. So be prepared to reinsert the sensor instantly.

Good Luck with it.

Note the above is if you have a sensor there. I think the HO's lack the sensor but not certain there.

The overflow tank going empty is not good.
How is the rubber on your radiator cap?
