I was trying to find out if anyone else had my issue from an autozone part, had no luck. I am tired of taking my damn valve cover off to get the clunky sensor in since the head of it is bigger than it should be.

I am a master at removing and replacing the valve cover now!

I shall get another replacement of a replacement to replace the replacement i broke before testing that replaced the original, then install it while I am replacing my exhaust manifold.

Thanks for the suggestions.

haha funny you mention that, they sold me the wrong oil pressure switch a few years ago too! They refused to take it back because I had installed it. Walked across the street and bought the right one.

I will call napa tomorrow for details since the sender pic on their site is the exact same stock image autozone uses, and looks identical to what I have been installing. The points on the head of the sensor touch the valve cover if not turned to run parallel, meaning a socket cant get past the valve cover to tighten the sensor down. I have seen multiple posts about the same issue, I just don't have the crows feet to do the job with the cover on.

I went from a 96 to a 97 sensor when I upgraded my gauges and had to use a crows foot to get the sensor in. No way to use a socket unless I took the cover off and I didn't want to do that.

Sorry to revive an old thread, but I'm having the exact same issues with the same exact Autozone part. Was this ever fully resolved? Maybe I need to get the part from the dealer? My normal operating temp sits right below red. The fan kicks on when it hits red and it goes past the halfway through red. I keep thinking the engine is about to explode in spectacular fashion! Yeah, I had to take off the valve cover, too. Hope the OP still monitors. I wanna know if he finally fixed it.

From my experience, don't buy sensors from Autozone. I only use them if I need fluids. Otherwise, it's Napa or Orielly's

Good to know moving forward. But for now, I'm hoping the OP is still around to tell me how he fixed this. I don't wanna have to keep buying new sensors from different places and popping off the valve cover each time.

It is my understanding that the sender unit is adjustable by backing off the threads until correct temp. The fitting is tapered to not allow leaks. I hope that is correct.
