Default Temp Sending Unit 91/96 Cherokee

Hi. I have a 91 Cherokee. I swapped the 91 engine with a 96 cherokee engine. 4.0, 6 cyl, 4x4. It runs! The temperature gauge is not working and I believe it is the sending unit. My question is which sending unit do I try to fix. The existing wiring has the little L shaped cap that goes on a bolt style sending unit. The 96 engine has a different style sending unit with a connector. When I had the wire connected to the bolt the gauge was pinned to the right. I ran a wire from the new/96 sending unit to the existing wire connector as a test and the gauge pinned back to the left.

Picture attached show both sending units and existing wire.

I would love some help coming up with a solution, please! This is my first engine swap and I have no mechanic background, but love jeeps!

Is your temp unit in the dash a gauge or a light? Could it be you have the wrong '96 sensor?

It's a gauge.

The sending unit in there now was already attached to the 96 engine I put in. I don't know how to connect to it though since the connection was meant for the 91 engine I took out

I thought about trying to order a 91 sending unit and seeing if it fits where the current 96 unit is. Hopefully that makes sense.

Pretty sure I'm in the same situation as you and trying to figure out what to do next. I just picked up a 77 CJ that has been swapped out to a 94 cherokee engine. Looks like whoever did the swap just ignored dealing with this part. I've got the rubber elbow connector threaded onto the sensor with no wire attached. I also have a plastic clip coming out of a wiring harness just hanging around right next to the sensor looking for somewhere to be plugged in.

What did you end up doing?

I cut out he rubber elbow connector and grabbed a 1996 connector our of the junk yard. you can find them online too.
Amazon Amazon
. I supposed you could also just order a 1991 sending unit and keep your elbow connector. That will be my next try. I'm stuck right now because when I went to take out the old sending unit it was so badly damaged that it broke apart and left the bottom house stuck in the engine. Hard to get back to it and I'm not quite sure how I'm going to get it out.
