95 XJ Sport. Was smelling antifreeze after I would get home after even short drives. I pulled the thermostat and tested it, it was a 195 OEM one and would only open part way and that was after it got to 207deg. I swapped it out as well as the water outlet housing and changed the temperature sensor as well as the temperature switch (the one on the back of the head.)

Everything works fine except now the temp light glows faintly when the engine gets to temp. You can barely see it during the day, hasn't gotten dark yet but it is no where near as bright as the other dash warning lights are when you go to start it up.

Any clues?

PS: No more antifreeze smell...

What exactly is your temp light? I only know of temp gauges

 

95 doesn't have a temp gauge, only a dash light with a thermometer symbol.

 

Some models only have warning lights. My 92 Sport 2wd only has lights, and not sure if they even work. Jeep gets hot and light has never come on except for when I start it.

I'd check the part number for the temp sending unit first to make sure they sold you the right one.

 

That was a good call.

Apparently there are two identical parts. The only differences being one is white and is for a temp gauge and one is black and is for temp warning light.

Guess which one Autozone sold me...

Put the correct one in and all is well.

 

What does "Jeep gets hot" mean? My guess is if the light is off, coolant temp is below 241.25F......that's where the red starts on the factory gauge to indicate overheating. Have u verified temp by some other means?

I've seen more than once a post saying "I didn't notice the needle was in the red"........I've never seen a post saying "I didn't see the bright red temp light".
