That's usually the case and 20+ years is a long time for people to have done X,Y and Z to the vehicle. I've had mine since last Oct and I've spent a LOT of time (and a fair amount of money) bringing it back to proper operation.

There are casting numbers stamped on the head that you can use to identify it - search the forum threads and there will be instructions and a chart of what means what.

Note from DJ
Your 94 Temp Sensor is located on the driver’s side rear of the head.

Thanks for the pic DJ!

Romans, take a very good look at this location and make sure that there is nothing there (it's also possible, but very unlikely that, the sensor sheared off). If there's no hole in the head, then the head (and entire engine possibly) is 97+.

Interestingly there's another thread where a guy with a 91 is looking to put a 98 engine in his XJ.

Nope the area where it should be is flat and completely smooth. So this must be a 97+ head on my 4.0.

Well, fortunately it's not too difficult to re-route the sending unit.

Sounds like a good plan. There are a lot of creative ways that folks have come up with. I saw a picture today of a guy with an in-line "redneck" aftermarket gauge that looked pretty professional.

It's your Jeep, so what you want to do with it is totally up to you. However, whatever you do, definitely report back with how it goes and maybe some pictures.

well update on that. I am broke so i have the new sensor ordered. I bought a 3/8 brass npt female threaded T fitting. I will pick up the 3/8 male coupler and the sensor friday when i get paid at Advance auto parts. The coolant sensor for the fan fits it perfectly i will thread both sensors into the t and the coupler into the housing. Considering using thread tape. I have noticed my exhaust manifold bolts were loose. Since i recently replaced the exhaust so i tightened all that up and replaced the little vacuum elbows that needed swapped. I will splice the sending sensors wire and extend it to the housing once i know if it threads into the T. i work at Advance auto so i will take the T in tomorrow and see if it fits while I'm at work. I have read other threads and forum websites and this seems to be the ideal route. Although i noticed the terminal for my cooling fans has corrosion so will look into ordering a new terminal. For anyone doing this i have read you do not want the sensors to touch when you thread them into the T. Also i had to get the T and will get the male coupler at the hardware store. I spent yesterday looking for parts that fit at advance and found nothing. So like usual i have to find other resources for my Jeep. Have a wonderful day comrades! I will post a picture when its done. Or at least attempt to.
