temp gauge doesn't work.

temp gauge doesn't work.
I have a brand new temp sending unit and a brand new thermostat... but the guage doesn't work and hasn't since I have had it. I took the dash apart and the connections were good. I even accidentally set the temp gauge to like 180 and when the xj started it dropped back to 0, I figure because there was no reading? any ideas?
