Default Temp Gauge is dead help

My temp Gauge on my newly purchased 95 Cherokee has died. The first two days I had the gauge it would fluctuate. I was thinking a bad ground but now it is totally dead. What is the easiest way to chase the wires to get it working again? Looked for a good wire diagram in my Chilton's but it was not much help. Thanks!

If it is factory, i would check the temp sensor. Search it, I am sure you have two temp sensors, one for the gauge, one for the computer. U should be able to check with mutimeter, just search for the procedure and the right sensor.

it is probably ur temp sending unit sensor. is is on the bak of the head. about 10 bucks for the sensor. easiest way to get of is alot of wd40 and a socket hammer on.

Mine did the same thing. Mostly dead and at time wild fluctuations.

It's the sensor on the back of the engine.

My guess is when you look at it, part of the sensor connector broke off leaving a metal pin exposed and stuck to the connector at the end of the wire.

I have searched for this thing based on your picture. Any way I could get a better descritption of the location. I know I have probably looked over it and just haven't realized it. I got A temp sending unit from the parts store and it was the one that goes in the front in the coolant flange. The guy said it was the only one they had listed for the cherokee.

California Emission vehicles used two, one on the thermostat housing and one on the back of the head. Federal Emission vehicles only had the one on the thermostat housing.

I had the same problem, my gauge stopped working and a few days later it would start dieing. easy five minute swap, the sensor isn't to expensive either.

Worst case scenario, your gauge just took a dump, so just get one from A/Z or something and wire it up in the clock space to the right of the gauge cluster. I will be putting a trans temp gauge there.... I think it would look good.

Just an idea for the worst case scenario.

My 1995 is not a California vehicle and it has two sensors.

Pull the wire from the front one and the CHECK ENGINE light goes on.

Pull the wire from the rear one and the OIL PRESSURE GAUGE goes dead.
