Default Temp gauge

Hey guys I just got back from vacation an I noticed my jeeps temp gauge has stopped working. When I start it the needle makes one cycle like all the others but doesn't move after that. I got a new temp sender and still does the same thing. Tried hitting on the wires hopin it might make a difference and ha it didn't. Just don't know what else to do

And for some odd reason when they ignition and engine is off the gauge will go up past 100. And then drop to zero once ignition is on. Even after I've run it and know its hot. I threw the old sensor back in and still does that so I'm really not sure where to look now. I've been googling but not really finding a different solution.

I have a similar problem (I'll have to double check the ignition bit though tomorrow), though maybe not exactly the same; no thread highjacking intended.
My 98 XJ Sport temp gauge will currently sit at about the 10 o'clock position (it's usually at the 12 o'clock at op temp, the 210 degree range) during driving, heat seems to work fine, and I'm confident that the engine is not over heating as at times the temp gauge will go to the 12 o'clock position for just a few moments.
Prior to the thermostat, head gasket, hose replacements it used to either be down at 0 degrees or at 210, no heat; this seemed to happen during cold weather mostly at first and then was like that all the time.
Then just last week after months of no issues, a rough start after already driving for 30 minutes (sputtering, almost started, stalled) the temp gauge immediately dropped down to the 10 o'clock position and there it mostly sits.
