had a weird hesitation and check engine light came on . went to autozone and had them scan it cause my scanner was being borrowed. they pulled the code for the torque converter solenoid and ive been reading for weeks on other peoples posts . ive replaced the brake switch the tps and ive tested the plug and get 15 ohms across the three solenoid prongs . does this mean the solenoid is good ? shifts good 1-2 3 and then it doesnt shift like it should. been trying to not have to do the solenoid if i dont have to hate to change it and it not be that . any advice would be good im at my wits end with this issue i hate auto trannies .

I had the exact same problem a week ago, it showed up randomly every 2 months or so and fixed itself. After changing the tps, map, and adjusting the TV cable, nothing seemed to fix it.. It wasn't bothering me that bad until it started occurring 24/7... I finally traced it to the TCM and replaced that.. It cleared up. The transmission control module was bad. Hope this helps!

95 96 have the same TCM they will interchange, you can pull one from a salvage yard for 5-15 $

P0740 was the code they gave . Today after putting in a new tps it idles high about 1500 didnt idle that high before the tps . Butterfly is closed . So i may need to go back to the parts store and get that replaced.

P0740 is a torque converter clutch circuit fault. Generally means that when the PCM tested the circuit it found the resistance out of limits. That could be the solenoid, or it could be damaged wiring, dirty or loose connectors, etc.
I'd clean up the connectors, inspect the wiring, and adjust the throttle cable (see 'quick free fix' thread- title is something like that). You may luck out.

Ive adjusted the cable checked the connectors. Ive gotten it to turn off for 109 and 350 miles but its been on up until today it just went off sure itll come back. The tranny on this xj has always seemed funny to me since about my secon day of ownership its always acted weird and it didnt throw the code till about a month ago. When it goes away all i have to do is get it up to 50 and its almost garaunteed to come on. fighting a deathwobble issue so 50 doesnt happen often.
