Default TC Question

I have a 1994 XJ w/ the four cylinder in it. The transfer case sounds like the chain is slipping and im looking for a new one, the model is a NP 231J. Im not sure what the spline count is and im wondering if i can get just a standard NP 231 transfer case to replace it with. I've heard that a have to get another TC thats a 231J. Any imput would help!! Thanks

Found this one, although I'm sure you can find one cheaper somewhere else. You definitely don't need to replace the entire t case on account of a chain though

Sweet, but is tearing one of those things apart pretty difficult?

You dont have to do the upgrades but it gives you an idea of whats involved to decide if you want to tackle this. Just remember dont tear into unless you are comfortable, and can finish, most shops charge extra if someone started to fix it LOL. Its not that difficult take your time take pics as you go for reference.

If my chain is slipping would it be a possibility that I would also have to buy new gears

You sure it's not just the front DS? If the cv joint is bad it can sound like your TC chain is stretched and rubbing as it spins. Take the DS out and drive around. If the noise is gone, go get a new front shaft from a JY.
