The noise seems to be coming from the transfer case and the front axle u joints have been replaced.

I have an 01 that is making similar noises in the front end when steering, but while in 2wd. Then tonight it died on the way home. There is now a whining sound from under the hood. Didn't sound good so I had AAA drag me home. I am pretty sure the ps pump is bad, because when it was dead on the side of the road I was looking under the hood and found the ps pump leaking fluid and nearly out of fluid. What do you guys think? Is there something more than the psp at work here? Would that cause the rig to die while driving?

Possibly the power steering pump locked up enough to make the serpintine belt slip so u didn't charge the battery...It's a long shot but It's my best guess without seeing it

i found the other thing making noise on mine was the front driveshaft. finally gave out at the cv joint. take the driveshaft off and see if it still does it.

What do you think about using a used power steering pump?
