TC Drop Crossmember Broken Bolt - Help

Default TC Drop Crossmember Broken Bolt - Help

Hey, first post!


Thanks to PB Blaster 3/4 bolts/nuts from my TC crossmember came out fine. The last one popped off about 1mm below the surface. I heated it up with MAP, then drilled out the center, then heated it up, and inserted a tap, then cranked on it before it cooled, and the extractor broke off flush with the unibody. This was my first attempt at bolt extracting, epic fail.

Is it possible to hammer the nut out from below?

What about cutting a square around the hole and use a high grade carriage bolt?

What about drilling a hole in the side to gain access to the nut?

I have basic tools, a drill, a dremel, metric and standard sockets and wrenches. I do have a MAP gas burner, and a few punch outs.

Advice much appreciated!

The same thing happened to me. The broken bolt is still in there, but I drilled two holes, added two more longer bolts to the pinch seam, with spacers, and secured the crossmember that way. Now has 3 bolts that side, one of the originals, and two extras.

you can hammer the bolt /nut out into the frame rail then get some grade 8 bolts and some mech wire and fish it in through the frame it works make sure to put a lock washer on the lock washer will stop the head of the bolt from turning allowing you ti tighten it

post 118 he fished a bolt taped to a box end wrench through the bolt didnt work i had it backwards when i was thinking about it

I've welded nuts to broken bolts and used a socket to remove them. A mig works well by welding through the hole on the nut. Be careful that you don't weld the broken bolt to the threaded insert in the unibody.

The other method that might work is to drill the broken bolt out starting with a small bit and working up. If necessary, you could re-tap the threaded frame insert.
