Any of you guys ever do this before? picked up a new xj and the PO liked to have his dog in the car so the carpets pretty gross. Plus i also want the check the floorboards for rust.

I'd like to just remove it then maybe pressure wash it and put it back in? Any thoughts/ ideas/ advice is appreciated!

I have removed and pressure washed a couple and they always turn out nice. I use Purple Power cleaner and it does the trick.

I wouldnt think it would be any worse than removing it. Not trying to be a smart a@# just saying .

X2
I do the samething and also use Purple power. Just make sure it's good and dry before you reinstall. While your at it and their already out you can do the same to the seats if you don't have leather.

I've done my carpet once, and it made a huge improvement. Plan on a couple of days for it to dry completely.

X2^ on doing the seat covers. Ive done my '90 and the fronts from a 2000 (teenage smoker's car). It made a huge difference in both cases.

Carefully remove them taking photos to aid in re-assembly. They may have hog rings, wires and little bungie cords holding the covers in. Wash the covers one at a time in the washing machine and hang up to dry. You may have to do the rear seat covers with the pressure washer. While disassembled, check the front seat pans for cracks at the mounting points and swap the foam from side to side if it is symetrical and worn unevenly (driver's side outside bolsters flattening). Once dry, reassemble the seats and wait for the carpet to dry.

Enjoy the clean seats and carpet while they last!

Easy with the pressure washer, you could damage it.
I've put carpets in my bath tub and scrubbed them down with Tide. Pick one that smells nice.... you'll be smelling it for a while.

I just stripped out my interior and carpet a few weeks ago days after purchasing my XJ.

Simple Green, scrub brush and a hose was all I used to clean the seats, carpet and plastic trim. I also dropped $20 bucks to buy all new padding for under the carpet (cheap to replace and is really where a lot of the smell gets trapped). Was able to pick it up locally from an upholstery retailer.

Took a full weekend, but looked and smelled like new when done.

I redid my intire interior..everything! The carpet, I pulled out and bedlined the floors..you should since your carpet will be out? I also took this chance to install a little sound deadener..I'll post the page for my buidl thread for ya..ride quality has greatly improved.
Anyway, I shampooed my carpet with boiling water and alot of soap and stain remover..the shampooer sucked out 90% of the water. I jsut kept redoing the carpet until my water came out clean..took me 3-4 times before the water came out clean vs muddy born. I then steam cleaned it just cause we have a steamer and I was being a weirdo about how clean I wanted my jeep lol.
Let it dry in the sun until it firms up. Install is a breeze, carpets shaped/formed to the jeep so it went in just as it came out!
My advice is ditch that crappy foam stuff under the carpet, it gets wet and mine stunk! I didn't put any back under the carpet either because its a waste when you think about it..it'l jsut get wet & stink again! Money wasted at that point!
I chose to bedline it while the carpet was out instead...it acts as a insulator & sound deadener and serves a good purpose. Once its there it won't rust, and if you ever flood the jeep it'll be easy to clean!
I just took a couple of peices of really rough sand paper, and with an extra set of hands, spent about 45mins roughing up the paint on the floorboards..didn't need it all off, just roughed up pretty good, wipe it all down really good. And bedlined away! Its under the carpet so you don't need anything super rough, or super expensive..just something that does the job its ment to do! I got the cheap stuff, rustoleum bedliner from walmart. Happy with how thick it is, its rough but not too rough, and 1 gallon was like $43 bucks and was the perfect amount!
My jeep is loud, like no exhaust loud lol..and inside you can bearly hear a thing, it rained recently and I didn't get that whishing water sound most gutted cars get. Wind sound went way down..like highway driving sound, you hear tires and wind whoosping by, well that went way down as well. I added insulator to my roof, its like sun visor material but thicker, the jeep felt cooler in summer once it was added and the whoopsing air sound great reduced...theres no sound deadener on the roof at all which sucks for ride quality!

I spent about 80 bucks with everything I did..45 or so on bedliner, and 14 on a roll of insulator that I used for the roof, and some foam deadener for the 1/4 panel and doors & a can of 3m adhesive spray glue stuff.!
Anyway look here for pics/ideas if you want, most of everythings on page 3..

I did something similar. You may also want to apply a layer of Peel and Seal (poor mans Dynomat) with a plastic vapor barrior sheet above it on the floor as well. Made it very quiet. We did this are are very happy with the results:

DUDE I wanted to do this so bad but my lowes "doesn't carry it" neither did home depot & I didn't want to wait for them to order it..so I settled on that insulator instead..I say use the insulator on your roof cause it'll block out heat and litteraly insulate the jeep, and peel & seel everywhere else!
Notice the fact he put it in the quarter panel? That will help tones! Put in in the doors as well, put it every where theres bear metal, without making it tacky or a mess lol.

I would lay the floor with this stuff, take some sand paper and lightly sand it, so its rough and then bedline over it. That was my original plan and its been done before...that way you have sound deadener and then bed liner as well..DONTT PUT THIS ON TOP OF BED LINER! lol.

and your main points of interest for sound, will be the roof, doors, and trans tunnel/foot wells..Thats where omst of your sound comes from!
