What can i do or check? i just picked up a 98 cherokee limited auto trans. Not sure if it makes a difference on running gear but its the upcountry suspension. When i try to put it back in 2wd, it doesnt go out of 4wd. the previous owner said sometimes he has to drive for a couple miles till it finally comes out. What can cause this or what could i check?
How are you determining this? Just the word of the former owner? On a '98, it's strictly a mechanical linkage; no vacuum, electronics, etc. are involved. Does the TC "feel" like it shifts correctly between ranges (the feel of the lever when you shift)? Any strange noises? How's the fluid level/condition?

Here's how to shift it, assuming you have 4 of the same brand and size tires inflated to the same pressure.
A thought:
Have you checked the condition and level of every fluid on your newly acquired Jeep yet?
Here's how the factory suggests you shift the transfer case and I've been doing this since these things were new and I worked at the dealership. Quoted from the owner's manual.
"To engage, shift the transfer case lever from 2H to 4H while the vehicle is moving at any legal speed". I let off the gas, throw the lever, and then tap the gas and let off.
4L position: " To engage, slow the vehicle to 2-3 MPH , shift the transmission to Neutral, then shift the transfer lever to the right and pull firmly rearward to 4L".

Is that the same method for a 1991 XJ with a 231 TC and a vacuum disco front axle.? My TC lever reads 2H,4H,N,4L

Yes, NP242 and NP231 shift the same.
This problem can be exacerbated by using 4H (Part Time) on pavement (a big no-no), and not letting off the gas. On slushy icy roads if my TC doesn't return to 2H quickly I'll just let off the gas, I can hear it shift immediately (I really need to install new U-joints hehe)
Don't forget to check the fluid level an condition. Low lubricant will cause this issue.

If you're feeling brave, you can try putting in N, and pressing the brakes.
Once I used mine a few times, it was disengaging 4WD much quickly on the highway.
First time, it took like a minute or two. The 4th time, it took a few seconds.
