What he said. Mines a '93 but should be close to same. There are the scews of course. There are little plastic push inserts with one end fixed to the panel and the other end, 'shaped like kinda like a tree' that push into holes in the door. Carefully pry a flat bladed tool into the bottom corner of the panel and you'll see what we are referring to. I'd spend the extra on the panel tool, gotten at most automotive stores and inexpensive, but a flat bladed screw driver will work in a pinch. Once you have the bottom corners popped and loose, 'carefully' pry the panel just enough to see the next insert and get your screw driver end right next to the insert and pry down slowly and repeat. I remember about 6 to 8 of the little buggers. They get brittle with time and break very easy but most auto stores carry replacements, that and it never hurts to have a few around just in case, again 'cheap'. Once all are loose, the panel is lipped on the top, so lift up on the panel sliding it upward toward the window and open a cold one. Oh, and have fun! Spend the extra on a good set of speakers like you said. I first replaced with a set from a local auto and the freakin' stock speakers were better! I coulda used that $60 to buy beer! or soda! The stocks were 5.25in and I opted for a 6.5 set of Kickers that fit very easily by drilling a few new holes without having to modify the plastic panel at all.

There's also a little lip that sits over the metal sill of the window. Once you get everything unbuttoned from the bottom up, lift it upward to release it from that sill.
