Does the condition come and go? I had a 98 Cherokee that did a similar thing with the airbag light lighting when it happened and would randomly cut out and come back on. The pins on the connector for the gauge cluster were dirty/corroded and needed cleaned.

hi,don't know if this will help but on my 98 2.5 diesel, the tacko was jumping about badly and stoping, seemed to get better if i was face'n up hill. so i put it down to loose wires. found a big bunch of wires running across the top of the engine near the windshield that were touching the engine and had melted! fixed them all up and the tacko worked fine. you could try a quick check for that. noel

This is exactly what my 98 is doing. How hard is it to get to the connector?

This is a common problem, even my 93 does it. The dealer should have an updated connector as well to help fix the problem.

Remove the dash bezel (careful as there are some hidden screws, one right above the light switch facing down and one right above the cig lighter facing down I believe.), remove the gauge cluster and plug is on the back.
Mainly just remove a bunch of screws, not real hard.
