T-case clunking noise
First off I should introduce myself. My name is Mack live in Wyoming.
So I ended up doing some unknown trading with future son in law I gave him a 4 wheeler and I got in return a '97 Cherokee. 4" lift 35" tires on board air comp. 9,000LB winch set up in the right direction but when he brought it over he told me he thinks it needs a T-case rebuild or new one? So my issue is when I have had T-case go out in the past the vehicle is pretty much useless. The only time the T-case makes noise is when it is in 4x4 then it clunk and acts like it locks up almost feels to be the front drive line to me? What is your thoughts on this should I remove the front drive line and test will that tell me if it is indeed the front drive line without it being under a load of the front axle? Or should I look else where for what could be causing this?
Thanks Mack

Remove the front drive shaft, see what it does in 4x4 then. If it runs/sounds fine, your issue is more likely with the driveshaft or the front diff/axle.
Most likely, the weird double-joint on your shaft on the T/case end went out. Which means you're looking to send it somewhere to get rebuilt (Unless they changed the design on the new XJ's) since you need a special compression tool to service that joint. Just had mine rebuilt, cost me a little over $220, but that included a rebalance and fresh paint.
