which is better a 231 or 242 the one in my gfs 92 xj is due for a rebuild

This would depend on if your GF would be driving around in 4wd a lot. If she will spend a lot of time in 4wd the 242 might be a better case, but if she has a 231, I couldnt see swapping it over.
