NP231 has Part-time Low, and Part-time High, and 2wd High only...........
NP242 has Part-time low, Part-time high, FULL-Time HIGH, and 2wd high..
easiest way to tell is look for the round New Venture Gear tag screwed onto the back of the t-case. it will have the model stamped right on there.
If it's missing, there are other ways to identify them. There is a whole chart listed in the December issue of Jp Magazine.
If it came factory with a 242, the Selector for 4wd will have:
2wd, part-time 4wd, full-time 4wd, neutral, 4Lo
If it came factory with a 231, it's possible someone bolted on a 242 to replace the broken 231. I believe they are interchangable, as long as they are of the same generation.
I am pretty sure the 231 SYE, and 242 SYE are the same, but you'd better check that for sure............
