Rubicon makes a hack and tap that realitively cheap. Just be carefull when you do it !! After that use the front cv shaft off a cherokee and your set !!

The Rubicon hack/tap is a flange arrangment. The factory XJ front shaft needs a yoke style CV. So it's not a bolt-in deal. You can convert the CV .... but by the time you buy the correct parts and new ujoints --- you have saved nothing.

It's entirely possible to do it .... here is how I came up with the costs ....
Junkyard shaft ... $25 bucks
Ujoints (3 of them) .... $60 bucks
Labor to shorten & rebalance .... $80 bucks
New centering ball assembly ... $70 bucks
Total - $235 (assuming your splines are in good shape)
That's also assuming you can do everything but the shorten/rebalance ....
These are local prices for all the parts need to rebuild a front shaft and bolt it in.
Every situation is different .... but I can sell you a brand new shaft for not much more than the cost of "properly" rebuilding your old one. But again .... I'm giving you a full cost. If you have a known good shaft -- the total cost could very well be much lower.
