Do they make an SYE kit for the NP242 or would it be smarter to get a NP231 so i could get a 4x1 low in the future ?
Another question is a SYE kit just to get rid of the vibrations or could i just deal with vibrations?

the only kit that fits the 242 is the Hack n tap. IMO it would be more beneficial to swap in a 231
and the reason for a SYE is to get a longer drivshaft thus reducing angles and reducing the risk of driveline binding in the u joints

I think if you check with Tom Woods they have a 242 SYE

it would cost you more to swap to a 231 and then do a SYE
the tom woods kit will be cheaper
or you can just get a cv drive shaft with a slip yok you would need to shim you axle to change the axle angle to work with the cv DS

How so you it cost more i can get the 231 from a guy in town for around $100 and then SYE kit and CV driveshaft parts + labor for around $900 or should i just do it my self?

you could just spend that on the sye for the 242 the drive shaft is the same price ether way
don't let people tell you what you need do the research and make a decision

Its actually a pretty simple install. Ive done 6 for my friends and now im to the point that it takes me about an hour and a half to do the whole thing.
Oh and FYI, if you get a standard SYE (not a supershort) You can get a front driveshaft from any year XJ at a junkyard for around $40 and its the perfect length. Ive got pictures of a Tom Woods shaft next to a factory front shaft and theyre identical in length. If you wanna save a few dollars...or more like $300 dollars

I had a cv joint added to my original drive shaft
cost me about 150 but I'm in California so every thing cost more
it works great for me and I need no TC drop and could go another 2" in lift with no problems for the type of trails I run

I have been looking into this lately. You just added a cv joint to your rear shaft? I have a 4.5" lift with NP231 TC and dana 35 rear. Will this work on mine? Thanks Originally Posted by mike37

I would not do it on a high travel rig because you would have chance of pulling the yok out of the tc
but for a trail rig doing moderate stuff yes
I have had no problems
the SYE is the beast way to go you have the 231 so it my be money ahead to do the sye
