My dad just installed his Rustys 4.5 a few weeks ago and he used the t-case drop. Its not the greatest thing ever but you can definately get by until you can afford the SYE. Don't do any REALLY crazy wheelin and expect a little bit of vibrations at speeds above 60. But other than that you'll be fine. Just make sure you do the SYE eventually. You will want it.

it all comes down to every jeep is different. the older cherokees can handle more lift than the newer ones can.
some get vibes with 3" some dont get vibes with 8"
i personally run 6.5" in the rear with no tcase drop, no shims, no aftermarket drive shaft and i have zero vibes nor any binding issues on full droop.
just comes down to every jeep is different.
if you have the money for it than i would get it!!!! there are nothing but amazing to have.
if you dont and you get vibes you can drop your tcase and shim your rear axle to get you by

its the 97+ that are more prone...
but like i said every jeep is different. the fact that mine is a 96 and i have not had any issue without an sye or tcase drop means nothing about your 96 lol.
all i can say is..... if you have the money get it now.
if you dont have the money instal the lift and see what happends, if you need it get it. if you only get some vibes drop the tcase and shim the axle

Iro hack and tap $190
still comes down to money. i do need one pretty bad becasue my drive shaft is actually limiting my rear droop, sye would solve

i just did a body swap, i and on my 88 i was running a 7" lift with the stock drive shaft and a 1" transfer case drop, then i swapped all my suspension over to a 1994 body and axles as well. i drove it out of the garage and the rear drive shaft was binding at normal driving conditions during turns. like they said it all comes down to money, time, and ability to follow directions. i just ground down my slip yoke for the time being so i could drive it to my uncles shop for the motor swap, but he said he would put in my SYE while it was there.

96 xj is right about the older jeeps.
Same here Got a 6.5 lift and no t/c drop a sye. had a little vibe at 30 mph but then swapped the d35 out for a 8.25 and the driveshaft slid into the t/c more and vibes went away.

i didnt read all the other replys so this might be a little redundent but i know a few people that did the t-drop and long travel yoke but i also have heard that if you get a yoke from a yj that has the same motor, tranny and t-case its also a long travle yoke but then again rustys offroad sells them for about 50 to 80 bucks so its not that bad on ur wallet. hope i helped a little.
