Switch to 49 State
I have a '98 XJ 4.0 and it has 50 State California emissions on it. It only has one catalytic converter and two o2 sensors though. I keep seeing threads about having multiple cats and four o2's though.
What I wanna do is convert mine to a 49 state setup so I an eliminate all that engine bay cluttering crap that is un-needed or should I say unwanted as i am getting ready to turbocharge my XJ and would like the extra space. Does anyone know if I can just get a 49 state ecu and have it flashed to my vin and remove all the extra junk? I will be tuning the engine with either split second piggy back or AEM fic-6.
Yes I do know it is ""Illegal" to remove the emissions crap from my vehicle but hey I live in Florida and we don't have emissions lol

LDP doesn't affect performance, but it will trip the CEL if it's missing. You could probably re-locate it with a little creative plumbing.
How am I an idiot? Because I wanted to get rid of your tree hugging state emission crap? I was generous enough to put a new cat on it, if I wanted to I'd yank the cat and pull the o2's out of the stream to avoid the CEL. It's not like I'm eliminating all the emissions, just wanna ditch the California ***** crap so I could use my firewall room more efficiently.

You're an even bigger idiot than I had first thought. You should swim with the gators and be erased from the gene pool.

The O2's, also required for 49 state emissions, are not just for emissions purposes, the PCM uses them to keep your fuel / air mixture in the correct proportion. Engine actually runs worse without them! Without the O2's the fuel/air ratio is set to a compromise, generally too rich or too lean, both rob engine power.
Pulling them out of the stream will set an additional code, it won't eliminate them.
If you need the firewall room for something else, get some plastic tubing and re-locate the LDP elsewhere.
If you want to do away with this stuff, you need to find an engine that does not rely on electronic controls to operate correctly. Points and a carb era stuff. Computer controlled engines with crippled computer controls will never run better than stock, only worse.
You sir are an idiot! Don't worry, switching to an EPA approved 49 state emission package and never being able to come hug rainbows and trees in California with you, is not going to hurt anything but your feelings!
The LDP is also required for 49 state emissions. It verifies the integrity of your vapor recovery system.

I don't see that being true. My friend and I both have '98 XJ's and mine has tree hugger emissions and his has 49 State emissions. He has no leak detection system and a lot more room on the firewall where I need it. I am trying to clean up the engine compartment to utilize as much space as possible for turbocharger and accessories.
When I said pull the o2's out of the stream, I meant still keeping them in the exhaust but you can eliminate the Catalytic Converter on OBD II vehicles and install spark plug non fouler in between the 02 sensor and the exhaust bung and it tricks the sensor into thinking the cat is still there. Done it on several cars in the past. That was before I started using stand alone fuel management systems and fuel management systems that you can eliminate o2 signals. I however am not doing this with my XJ. I will be running an AEM F/IC 6 and only 8 psi of boost.

I could give a rat's a$$ about rainbows and hugging trees. Environmentalist have ruined this state. You're an idiot because you know nothing about how a computer controlled engine works, but spout bad info. You are a waste of bandwidth.
Really? Please explain how I know nothing about how a computer controlled engine works??? I am well aware of how Pre-OBD, OBD I, and OBD II works!
Oh wait... Was it because I said pull the o2's out of the stream? Which in turn means you can't read or do not understand terminology and kow nothing of how to make o2's still read correctly without a cat?
I've been tuning engines for years! I simply asked if I could switch to a 49 state setup and remove the ldp system as all the 49 state xj's I've seen do not have them.

If you're so well versed in how it all works, why ask the question? A self proclaimed expert should already know the answer.
