I have a NP242 in my 98 XJ. I put this one in when the original 242 messed up.

I want to put a locker in the front, which would make the full-time useless, and I eventually need a SYE, so im thinking about converting to the 231.

How hard would it be? I know it will bolt in but will the sensors and stuff plug up and work correctly? Shifting?

Sorry if this is a repeat. I couldnt find any info. Everybody does the opposite.

 

I know the driveshaft lengths are different you need new driveshafts out of one with a np231 hope that helps

I'm swapping the 242 in my 91 for a 231 out of a 95. Can't speak much about the DS. I'm putting a SYE in at the same time. Although, they look to be the same rear DS. I could check when I get over to my dads today.
