Sudden Transmission Problem today with 4.0 Auto: any advice please?
Hey Guys - I got a weird transmission problem with my Cherokee this morning: can anyone give me some ideas on what to check? It’s an '01 2wd 4.0 auto with 159k miles. Original transmission.
I started the Jeep this morning, drove it a few streets. At about the 3rd stop sign I stopped and then pulled out. But when I tried to pull away, nothing happened, like I was in neutral. I checked I was in drive and gave it more gas. The truck took up drive and was fine after that: in another 12 miles of stop-go street driving, it was perfect.
It was a chilly morning for SoCal: about 55 degrees, but the Jeep’s garage kept. Not exactly Arctic. Tranny fluid is pink and clear. Changes are crisp with no slipping or excessive revving. No bad noises, no check engine light. The selector was definitely in Drive properly.
I’d appreciate any advice: I don’t know much about auto transmissions, I’ve always had stick shifts. Torque converter about to go?
Thanks!!

to me at least I'd start by testing the TPS
