98 Cherokee 4L

Looking for some advice. Lately, my Jeep has been taking longer to start, up to about 4 seconds. Used to fire right up. In addition, it will sometimes stumble once after starting. Then all is well and it runs fine. Any ideas? Thanks.

A few thousand miles back I replaced plugs, wires, dist cap and rotor. Also, replaced the crank position sensor. I should also add that I'm in Tucson and it's pretty darn hot - over 100 for the last couple of weeks.

When you start it try the poor mans prime. Turn the key so the fuel pump rums(Not to the start position). Then turn off and do this 2 or 3 time then try starting it. If it start faster then you may have a bed fuel return check valve. Give that a try and let us know if it helps.

Well, the poor man's prime resulted in an immediate start with no ensuing stumble! So I guess I need a fuel return check valve. Thanks again.

The check valve(s) is/are in the fuel pump module assembly, which requires replacement of the module.

Bosch or Carter brand pumps are recommended.

Try Rockauto.com for pricing.

I'm glad it helped.
As CCKen said you will have to change out the fuel pump assembly. But there are many that just do the poor man's prime and have done it for years with no bad effects other then taking the time to prime it.
