Hi Guys!

Doing an oil change on my XJ couldn't be simpler, if we could just get the oil filter off! Ridiculous, drained all the oil, then couldn't get the filter off WITH the oil filter wrench. All the wrench is doing is denting the can. Both my son and I tried--stuck like chuck. Tried PB Blaster too.

Please tell me what to do... I bought what seemed like a really sturdy oil filter wrench made for import cars (you attach a ratchett to it) but it was too small.

Please help me, I plugged her back up, and put the old oil back in, until we get it unstuck.

Hammer a screwdriver through it. If that's not enough use the screwdriver and the oil filter wrench at the same time. And oil up the seal and threads when you put the new filter on.

 

Sounds like it was put on too tight last time. There are a multitude of tools made to remove a stuck oil filter. Over the years, I have acquired almost if not all of them. Some work for certain vehicles, some work for others. The one that I like the best, and have had the most success with is a rubber strap wrench. Clean the filter first (especially since you've already hit it with PB Blaster), attach the strap wrench and turn. As you turn the filter, the strap wrench gets tighter and usually gets the filter off.

If that doesn't work, you may need to invest in other tools. I have one that looks like a three finger claw that connects to a ratchet, as you turn it it get tighter.

When all else fails, you can always resort to pounding a screwdriver through the filter with a hammer. However, you bought the farm once you do that and there's no going back so I save that as a last resort.

 

Go get one of these to get it off. You can get it at autozone or almost any auto place.



It will take off any stuck oil filter.

This is what I had to deal with one time cause someone put it on to tight.
the guy was trying to cut it off and all kinds of stuff.. then I show up with my wrench and take it right off for him.



Then I put a Wix filter in for him.

A tip,, try to have the motor warm then try to get it off.. once and if it moves let the Jeep cool then finish the job..

 

Long screwdriver.

Stab it through the filter, break it free.

Or buy one of the good oil filter wrenches. Looks like a metal band with a hinge and a handle on it. Those work well.

 

What they said. In the future...pour a small amount of new oil into the filter, then dip your finger in the oil and cover the gasket with it...when putting it back on, get it as tight as you can with your bare hands. Nothing more than that. Golden.

 

Duma this is the exact wrench we have, not budging. Also, there's barely room to access it. We're turning it to the left, just making sure this is the correct turn rotation.

Yes looking at the filter from the passenger side of the vehicle. Push the wrench towards the engine to loosen it.

There is plenty of room for a filter wrench in there.

 

Have you tried it when the motor was hot or at least kinda really really warm?

 

That's what happens when the "monkey" doesn't coat the oil filter sealing ring with fresh oil upon installation.

 

I guess Firestone techs are too busy monkeying around.

So turn the wrench clockwise??? I thought we turned counterclockwise - to the left if standing in front of the engine???
