I stripped one of the 12 point wheel hub bolts. Both the bolt and the hub hole are stripped. Would it be alright if I just tapped it out? The bearing is still good so I hate to have to replace the whole thing.

Probably wouldn't be good to run it with 2/3 bolts holding it on, since the hub hole is stripped too. How did you manage to strip them?

Howed ya manage that? And idk for sure but since them there little bolts hold your wheel in place and if you wheel hard Id prob just drop the 60 bucks on a fresh one and save that as a trail spare brother.

I have no idea. I thought I tightened them to spec when I replaced my u-joints a couple months ago, but maybe I overtightened?

Its parked in the driveway until it either gets a new hub or I tap it. I wouldn't run it with only 2 of the 3. But if I rethread the hole and get a bigger bolt, wouldn't it be just as strong?

And I thought a new hub was closer to 120. Got a link to what I should really be looking at?

they should be torqued to 75lbs, and I am not sure about drilling it out and adding a bigger bolt. Autozone sells them for about 70ish, but i know people like to put the extra money into them to make them last. good ones sell for 125-150 each.

edit: wait why are you trying to take it off again? Is it stripped so bad it isn't even holding tight now or something

Lol definitly not what I wanted to hear. Do you think tapping it could get me by until a new one comes in? It will stay on the street till then.

I'd be leary of driving without all three. It was designed that way for a reason, ya know.

www.Rockauto.com, shipping and everything takes about a week, they do have other options for faster delivery though.

If it's just you, no spouse kids or others . . .
local, low speed driving to the market, school, work etc . . .
no highway, nothing over 30 ish or so MPH . . .
fair weather only . . .
Drive carefully IF you HAVE to. Those are extremely tough and durable bolts.
Drove mine for a week with 2 when I was waiting on a replacement hub and The Queen was away at monster-in-law's place.

I'm gonna order a new one today. Hopefully it will get here soon enough that I don't need to drive it.

Buy a new Hub. Use a torque wrench to torque it, next time.

I used a torque wrench last time. Can someone help me pick out the right hub assembly from rock auto? I looked but I'm not sure which one I need.

I would just retap it or get heli-coils. Might be cause I'm cheap but it works.

skip the RockAuto route. Their prices look good until you get the the shipping charges.

I recommend a Timken hub/bearing. They have an excellent track record with Cherokee owners. Front hub assembly is Part# 513084
