Overdrive is in the D with the circle around it position. Try driving in the 3 position and see what you get. That gives you a std 3 speed auto transmission. Won't hurt a thing. I use it while towing on steep grades.

We started doing that, I get no motor shake when it's in 3, once I hit 50 I can switch it into D. Is it something with my over drive, can I just leave it in 3 out is that bad to do

I wouldn't do it myself. First off of course is the increase in fuel consumption. But my main concern would be doing more damage to the vehicle. I just wanted you to drive it in 3 as a test. I don't know what could be the problem but I'd want to find out. Maybe someone will reply who knows.

Here's how I do it.

* Push button and hold in
* Push in conduit till it stops
* Go WOT (wide open throttle)
* Release button
* Release WOT

Make sure your getting WOT by having someone hold the gas pedal all the way down.

How does the trans fluid look?

You don't have five gears on your automatic. You have only four and the fourth is an overdrive gear. But you do have a locking torque converter, which makes it feel like it shifted into one more gear. At around 40-45 in 4th gear (the D position), the torque converter on the transmission is in and out of lockup. If you cruise at that speed on level ground with a very light petal, you can see the RPM "hunting" on your tach, or if you don't have a tach, you can feel it and hear the engine RPMs hunting a bit as you're driving. This is normal. The lock up will occur in 2nd gear in the 1-2 position, will occur in 3rd gear in the 3 position, or will occur in either 3rd or 4th gear in the D (OD) position, depending on how hard you accelerate. I think your shudder has to do with the lock-up of the converter, but based solely on your description, I'm not sure if what you're experiencing is a problem . It won't hurt anything for you to drive in 3rd gear, and it will go into 3rd lockup on the torque converter. It is recommended that you always remain in 3rd if towing, since the constant shifting back and forth between 3rd and 4th while towing puts unnecessary strain and wear on the transmission.

It sounds from your description, that the torque converter might be having a little problem going into lockup, until you force the situation by either heavier acceleration to get on past the 40-45 range, or easing up on the accelerator to let it lockup before accelerating further. Could be a sluggish lockup solenoid, could need to tweak the throttle cable adjustment a bit more, or could simply need a fluid change. Check your transmission fluid... wipe the stick on a clean white paper towel....should be red, not brown, and should not smell burned.

Automatic xmsn doesn't have a flywheel. Has a flexplate, instead.
