Stop/tail light bulb position ?
All right - I was replacing a burned out stop/tail bulb (2057) on our newly acquired Cherokee, and something still didn't seem quite right. So I took apart the other side, and - lo and behold - the double filament stop/tail bulb socket is in the top position in the passenger side rear light fixture, while the stop/tail bulb is in the second position from the top on the driver side
Which way is it supposed to be

You can twist the socket into either, they both shine into the same lens (brake/running light). It might look slightly odd when you apply the brakes but it's probably not even noticeable. I would put them in the same position on both sides just for symmetry but I'm OCD about stuff like that.

Well, I decided to put the double filament brake light bulb on the top as it seems much brighter that way. The new bulb that I put in wasn't showing very bright in the 2nd from top position, so I switched the sockets to match the other (passenger) side.
It was more than slightly odd - the new 2057 bulb brake light on the driver side hardly showed up at all in the 2nd from top spot.
Seems as though there is a second single filament bulb (not the signal or back-up) that is also a tail light

Correct, there are two bulbs acting as tail lights. One of them does double-duty as your brake light. Now that you mention it, I think there is a reflector incorporated into that 2nd slot that probably blocks a lot of the light if you stick the brake light bulb in that socket. Putting it on top was a better idea. When I got my Jeep the tail light housings were so full of dust and dirt that you could barely see them at night and not at all during the day.
Not sure if the sockets got swapped by some yay-hoo changing the bulbs or it came that way from the factory. This jeep looks like it had been a pavement princess until we just got it.

That said, 2357 is a brighter and heavier duty version of 2057.......
Hey, I appreciate a good joke.
Thanks, next time I will buy 2357.

BTW, one of my daughters lives near Prescott. She has an old Trooper.

She's living with another family in Prescott Valley right now. She just started a job with a place that repairs computers (I don't know the name of it but it sounds like a pretty big outfit). Her other job is training horses for people. She's pretty good at that and I expect someday she may be doing clinics like Lyons and Branaman etc.
