I have a '91 cherokee laredo and since I bought the jeep I've had vibrations at almost all speeds. I saw that the transmission mount was shot so I replaced it and it didn't help. Then decided to check the grease in the u-joints and they were basically dry. The vibrations are a lot better now. But it still seems like there is too much vibrating than there should be. I'm wondering if you guys have any suggestions on what it could be, is it just how the jeep is? Or could it just be that the tires are louder than most tires are?

Does the vibration change when you accelerate? Decelerate? Shift to Neutral? Do you feel it from the front- steering wheel? Seat of your pants? Everywhere?
Could be anything from out of balance tires to front and/or rear u-joints to a bent rim.
Might be able to narrow it down with more details.

 

how long ago if ever since youve had it were u joints replaced ,and what condituon are the tires in also street tires all terrain or mud thread.

 

It's accelerating. It's not from the steering wheel which makes me think its not an alignment issue. Had the tires balanced when I bought the jeep about 2 weeks ago. The vibration is mostly everywhere. But if it was the u-joints wouldn't it still vibrate when coasting? I'm starting to wonder if it just runs like this because of it being a '91

 

And the tires are Michelin ltx tires with about 70% tread left

 

I have been having the same type vibrations on my 95. Im not sure how much this will help but I changed my t-case fluid and my diff fluids and it helped the vibs diminish a bit.

 

I'll try changing those fluids and I'm sure the jeep could use it lol

 

sometimes yes, sometimes no. It's quite common to have them coast along smoothly until you put power to them.

 

thats exactly what I was thinking when I changed them. And from the looks of them they had never been changed in the 220k miles the xj has seen. my t-case actually was almost half a quart low. so mine could have been the slip yoke wasnt getting its proper share of fluid so it wasnt performing like it should. Hope this helps solve your problems!

 

Just bought a 91 Cherokee with 183,000 miles, what should I do first? Replace ****? Lift ****? What what?

I'm at 157k but I'll still go with changing diff fluids and transfer case fluid. Then if it does do much I will replace my u-joints. Which I think I need to do anyway because when I got it the grease was leaking and would spray the undercarriage above the u-joints. That's how I figured they were dry. So replacing them is on the list of things to get
