Get some tow hooks up front, either factory or aftermarket and if you have a trailer hitch you can get a mount for that as well.

If you have a class 3 tow hitch you can take the hitch portion out and then run a strap into the square"hole" Run your pin through the eye in the strap, dont forget to install the clevis pin to hold the hitch pin.
Its a perfect place to pull from, and Ive read its very much approved in a pinch. I used it the first time I got stuck, and it worked like a charm.
NOT a good idea to pull from a tow ball,It can snap and turn into a projectile.
Lots of good tips in the "4 wheelers Bible".
Best way to get pulled out is to get pulled out backwards.Pulling out the same way you went in. In otherwards if you are traveling and get bogged down, you may have "plowed" mud in front of you. If someone pulls you out,it should be backwards because that area is cleared.
Think of it as going into a minefield. Youve gone as far as you have when you get stuck. From the point you enter to the point you stop, you know its clear. If you get pulled any further forward, there may be "landmines" that can affect you and the vehicle doing the recovery...GET IT? I use this analogy because Landmine Warfare was my specialty in the military.
OH and if you havent seen it already...YOU GOTTA WATCH THIS (Whole Video)!! POOR CHEROKEE
At this point im thinking its time to call a wrecker.

Not that I recommend the following...
But I was stuck deep enough so all 4 tires had a clean hole and my axels were buried so deep there was no way of using them as a tow point. So we got a really big bucket loader and tied off to my left rear shackle... Using only chain...
For the sake of it I put it in 4 low and got on the gas as I was being towed out.
But in the end nothin broke. And to this day it's good to go. I've also had to use the axles in a couple situations; once for pulling a high-centered subby off of a snowflake
(it was barely stuck...) and once for getting myself out of a pretty deep hole...

I got a set of Mopar hooks used for $35 from a part out. Take a look on the jeepforum.com classifieds under the part out section, you may get lucky like me

seriously, if you're gonna go off road, get the proper tow points installed correctly. this is no game.
but worse case scenario, use a strap through the front doors behind the seats and out around the rockers under the jeep to the front or rear. set the strap evenly so both loops are center out under the bumper. then use a clevis and another strap or winch cable from there. just close the doors one click so you don't damage the strap. on 4 doors, watch that the strap doesn't slip under the rear door lip or it might peel it upwards.
it's easier to mark the middle of the strap so you know it's centered behind the seats.
use caution. but if done exactly this way, there will be absolutely no damage.
this is called a cruze loop.
