stock fender flares on trimmed fenders, does it work?

I reused my flares after cutting. Heres some pics.

How did you reattach them?.. really looking to avoid those old rusted "brackets" especially since almost every single bolt snapped like a tooth pick

I used short bolt and nuts.I did'nt reuse the brackets just bolted right through the flare and fender.
