I have a valve that sticking when I first start up, it gets worse with cold weather. Is there anyway I can clean it with the head still on the Jeep? Before you say sea foam, I need you to realize I'm in south Korea and they have no such thing here. I tried ordering some but they can't ship it too me because of customs or something. I need this fixed bad because I'm not running a muffler ATM (long story) and I think it's an exhaust valve. So when I start up it sounds ridiculous, plus I'm sure it's killing my plug and just caking more grim into my cylinder. Any suggestions? I'min the army so I can still get some American stuff on post. I tried the slick 50 engine cleaner, but it was an oil additive and didn't help.

spraying brake cleaner into the opening on the valve cover can give it a good cleaning, then manual rotating the engine. brake cleaner or any type of harsh solvant. never tried it and sounds fishy, but also logically sounds like it might break up years of crud n grime. obviously an oil change is required immediately, then i'm guessing another there soon after.
just a thought.

Chances are it isn't a valve sticking but a lifter not pumping up upon start-up. Shut if off immediately when this happens. Wait a few seconds and restart it. I bet the problem is gone. If that's the case, you need to flush the crankcase and add some good oil, possibly with an additive like Lucas.

It usually stops within 15 secs of startup. It's a 93 with 110,000 miles on it. It's been in Korea it's whole life, and the gas her isn't known for it's quality. I'm thinking that it's just an abundance of carbon build up.

if you cant get an additive to clean out the gunk in your engine. I have known many people to put and quart of transmission fluid in . drive for a day or so and drain.

Sticky lifter. Carbon wouldn't go away in 15 seconds.

keep in mind guys he's stationed in Korea... it's not like he can run down to AutoZone, but the advise you have is solid. i'm sure the PX doesn't carry too many solvants. i was thinking more of a Seabees correction.
use what you have n make it work.

It usually happens when you see a hot female in a nice xj, at least for me anyways....
In all honesty there is a tiny hole on each lifter that allows it to prime with oil which is why it is a hydraulic lifter, when sludge gets built up it can block the hole and create a sticky lifter.

Varnish & Gunk. Wonder if it's had high detergent oil like we have. (helps prevent that)....I heard once "HD" stands for high detergent, not heavy duty.
Also herd putting high detergent in an engine run on older oil can cause problems freeing up gunk that clogs things like lifters.
Any chemists out there? Isn't toluene, used in painting, the same as in Kem-tool?
