Default Steering wheel play

How much is normal and when should the steering box be replaced? My steering a kind of sloppy and I would like to get it firmed up.

I can move my steering wheel about an inch before anything happens.

Sounds a bit much.

Have someone turn the steering wheel back and forth while you look for sloppiness in the components.

I did. The steering wheel was being moved about an inch with no movement of the arm.

Next thing to check is the U joints on the sector shaft
