steering wheel jerks

Default steering wheel jerks

97 xj when i turn and start to straighten the steering wheel starts jerking like im in 4wd. i have looked to see if tie rods are bad and drag link but seen no play in them at all. im at a loss at the moment.

T-case in 4wd?
Climb underneath and check your linkage to be sure.

Dose the whole jeep "hop" or just the steering?

Nope it not in 4wd and it only the steering that jerks

you might just have a tight/bad u-joint in one of the front axles.
or the same thing in your steering shaft.(the one from your column to your steering box).

Yup jacked the front end and the right front ujoint is tight. Time for a new ujoints.
