The rules here on vehicle modification are very vague, but open to a lot of "interpretation" depending on the "interpreter" if you get my meaning. Law says owner may not modify vehicle outside of original design. This means lifts are OK as long as you don't change the type of suspension, etc - i.e. no rear disc conversions, no SAS for Yota owners (but they do it all the time and drive on the roads). So to remove the airbag would be to change the safety restraint system and thus would make my jeep illegal for road use. I've asked a number of law enforcement officers. Technically any aftermarket exhaust is illegal unless you get it stock from the dealer! Thing is, no one really cares about these things unless you give them a reason - I keep my exhaust on the quiet side, keep my wheel near the edge of the flares, drive normal on the roads, just general safety and courtesy and I've never had a problem. There is no state inspection so you could register here with the airbag light on, but if you got a ticket for say, speeding, they would tack on a "defective vehicle" charge for the non-functioning safety system!
Sorry for the lengthy post, but it's not always cut and dry!
FWIW I decided if I couldn't stand my steering wheel rot any more I'd get some cork handlebar tape for road bikes and go to town! hehe (still a little nervous when I'm bumpin around on the trails though!)

I can say that my buddies 96 HAD a airbag. We were hitting whoops in his 96 daily driver jeepspeed style rig & boom there goes the airbag. Lucky we didn't crash because of it, sure scared the ***** out of us though. And powdery stuff all over his face, was priceless but damn scary.
Oh and we are in california and he still registers this with no issues what so ever! I say if you wanna do it and don't mind not having one then go for it.
My 88 doesn't have on either, but i make sure to be the cautious guy since I have a baby on board!

haha i'm gonna put disconnects on the front here soon and I've pretty much decided I'm gonna delete the rear swaybar when I get rid of my blocks for a real spring lift. I drive a lot of snow and everyone says it gets better traction without it. The law would have to crawl under there to see I'd removed it and if they're doin that I'm gettin nailed for the exhaust and probably other stuff too. Pretty sure no rear swaybar would be "defective vehicle" though. I know there are a million people doing way worse mods than that in my county so I'm not too worried about it. I don't wanna do anything crazy, obnoxious or dangerous (at least not to the jeep).
