steering wheel
Trying to find a kit to put an aftermarket steering wheel on my 97 Cherokee country. I've bought the grant steering wheel but the adapted plate kits sold for that model the splines are different so is there a kit that will work out there

Grant 3196 Horn Kit - states it's only for Jeeps thru '94, but that may simply be because they added airbags in '95 and all the legalities involved. Fit perfect on my '90.

It's going to be almost imposable to find one by part numbers because of the airbags. I knew someone that did change out the stock steering wheel. He had one hell of a time finding the right adapter. The only way he found it was counting the splines and by measuring every adapter the he picked up and he still had to modify it. Personally I thought it was a waist of his time.

The problem with removing an airbag is that in many cases (not necessarily with the XJ) the other safety features are engineered around the existence of an air bag. So the crumple zones can be a little crumplier, the pyro-tensioners in the belts can delay a little longer, the steering column can be a little less collapsible... all because the airbag is there to insulate you from harm. Remove the airbag and suddenly those things become far more dangerous.
That said, I'm pretty sure they just added an airbag to the Jeep in 96 and didn't do much else so if this will be a trail rig with harnesses, I see no problem with removing the airbag wheel. I think it's far safer than an accidental deployment of the airbag.

Just an FYI. On my 1996 the air bag can easily be turned off. On top of the steering wheel main body is a cap, under the cap is a bolt. Unscrew (not remove) this bolt and airbag is disarmed. Screw will be sticking out almost an inch.
All components of the airbag system are in the steering wheel. Airbag is always armed and will operate regardless key position or if engine is running or not.
This info for 1996 and earlier.

I can imagine it's not much fun being impaled on the steering column. Bodies in motion tend to remain in motion unless acted upon by some opposing force and what not.

What he doesn't know that a very specific chain of things has to happen for that bag to go off. I'll bet he has nightmares about that bag going off if he hits a bump.
