Steering box; replaced with cheap reman
steering pump; replaced wih cheap reman
linkage; boots replaced with poly and greased with high tech los alamos rocket grease
Still loose and harps or squeaks while slipping in the first mile or two down the road.
Doesn't matter if it's been warmed up or not. Just matters how far it's been driven, like I said like a mile or so.
What the **** could it be at this point? Please advise. tnx

Last thing it could be in my mind is maybe those other tie rod ends. I replaced one that had frakd threads but the rest seemed fine. How stiff are they suppossed to feel though? The moved fine, nice and fluid, by hand. Nice and stiff too. Onced greased they seemed right.
Could it be the steering colmnn? I read in the book that there's a grease point there were the box connnects with the bar but I couldn't locate it on mine.
Is it there? is it that ****ing bar?

The best way to tell is to watch the entire steering linkage while a helper moves the steering wheel back and forth. Have you aligned it? If the toe is off, that can make the steering feel loose.

It almost sounds like a loose belt or even a cracked steering brace or frame. Or something too tight.
Ask someone local in the new Mexico roll call to see if anyone close to you. I seen that your from Santa ill be up there possible tomorrow. Could lean you a hand if you would like.

Check ur steering gear/frame
Attachment 219506
. This is what I found on mines. Only 1 screw was holding the steering gear.

Is it safe and or legal to repair that? I ask because my neighbor had a wrangler (yj) that had this happen. The mechanic told him it was toast and it was not legal to repair and would never pass inspection after a repair. So he sold it cheap to some other local guy who welded up some plates and is driving it around like nothing ever happened. Is that dangerous or did my neighbor just get bad advice from his mechanic?

Been just dealing with it for awhile. It's not the gearbox mount. I just mounted a new one after all.
In fact, this desert jeep has very very little rust anywhere.
I am so shocked that you jeep guys don't have any suggestions other than to "have someone wiggle it and look" or check for something obvious... hmmm
It seems to be somewhere between the gearbox and the steering wheel since I've replaced almost everything else.
BTW the camaro steering box rocks. Although it's pretty much the same as the stock one now that I've driven it awhile. Maybe the "sport" in this xj's name has something to do with that?
Anyway, I'd still appreciate a point in the right direction if there are any experts about. tnx
(It still squeaks a little and slips when cold but once driven for about 10 minutes it tightens up and works perfectly.) What a freakin mystery!
