Default Steering Problems

Hey guys, not too recently I bought my first Jeep. A 2000 XJ Sport. I friggin love it and it's my new daily driver and I want to turn it into a weekend rig as well. Of course there are some slight problems with it but hey that's how it goes.

So my issue is the steering. I understand I bought it and the owner replaced the trac-bar and steering stabilizer. However I have to hold the steering wheel slightly to the right for the wheels to stay straight. There is also more resistance turning right than there is going left. When I turn the wheel is makes a pretty loud...for lack of a better term...moaning noise. Yeah literally can't think of a better way to say it. I don't know if it could be something to do with the column or stabilizer or what. I wanna learn how to fix stuff myself so I gotta start somewhere.

Thanks!!!

I have the same issue except for the moaning noise. In cold weather my steering squeaks a lot until the system warms up. I have had 4 alignments in the past year and a half, and my Jeep drives slightly straighter but its still off. I would suggest checking tie rod ends and other parts of the steering system for play which could be causing your problems. Outside of that, and as in my case, it turns out to be the steering gear box that is actually worn out, in which case you should look into a remanufactured box. Even though your Jeep is stock with no lift, you should look into a Durango steering box as a replacement. I KNOW A LOT OF PEOPLE ARE GOING TO JUMP IN AND SAY FOR A STOCK CHEROKEE WITH NO LIFT, A DURANGO BOX IS OVERKILL, BUT I'm TRYING TO PUT ONE IN MY STOCK CHEROKEE. Hope this helps you.

Sounds great, thank you very much. Yeah I've looked around and heard bout the Durango box. I think I'm gonna head to a junkyard and try and find one or something. Let me know how that goes and maybe make a build thread for the steering box!! I'd use it. But I will take it in for alignment and check everything else. It's quite annoying haha
