So you want to know how to replace it then? Remove the wheel, brake caliper and rotor. Then remove the axle nut. Then remove the three bolts holding the wheel bearing on and install two or three bolts with the same thread but longer into the holes with extra length sticking out so when you hit the heads with a hammer the bearing will be driven out. Then remove the axle shaft. Remove the two ball joint nuts the hit the knuckle hard with a big hammer where it mounts on the ball joints and it will fall right off. Reassembly is reverse. Hope this helps! BTW now is the time to replace axle ujoints, ball joints or wheel bearing.

Any decent parts house will have a Heli-Coil Kit for the thread size you're dealing with.
Drill, tap, insert...Done!

Or there's that. Definately easier than swapping the knuckle out. Takes 5 minutes to helicoil the holes

Every friend with a machanices sertifid and shops say not to re thread it it wont last long for this part to much stress and heat pressure this was my first idea and them telling me that worried me as to wether or not i should replace i know it needs u joints and i get shaking so may need ball joints so i guess its not really extra work this thing was a farm truck for 40,000 so its rusty and worn but shifts good and motor runs vary well couldnt find better where i leave for the price

Just replaced both hub assemblys and axle u-joints on my rig and must say it went suprisingly well, only took me a couple of hours. I don't see the ball joints causing you any serious trouble. Search the fourm they are several write-ups on replacing said parts that were very useful. Good luck

It took me a while but a shop help coiled it. But now I have done my passanger u joint all went ok. Drivers side i had a bolt snap off in my hub assembly the bolt closest to bumper. I have the hub with axle out attached together but where to get new bolts and auto zone says there hub assembly won't work unless u buy there cv shaft style axles they sell. In not saying they just want more money because they told me to try somewhere else because those are weaker than any u joint. So did your hub assembly's come from auto zone and work ok there only 72 id rather find a way to get my bolt out of it tho there's 3'' of bolt to get a hold on. And its half way out of the threads so not much farther to go. I can't get my axle off the hub without it being on my truck so not sure but to get that bolt out. Not sure how i would get that axle out of the hub in a driveway lol i have no torch either.
