when exactly does it knock? i would also check your front u joints. if its a small knock at turn it could be one of those u joint going. otherwise do like he said and check for a crack.

Check the sector shaft coming of the steering box for lateral movement. Mine has it, and it make a clunk or thump etc... HTH!!

The shaft coming out of the bottom of the box that the pitman arm attaches to. It doesn't take much movement to be a problem. I saw that your XJ is an 89, and assumed that it had never been replaced. I have an 87, and need a new box, my last trip confirmed it!!

can you feel it in the steering wheel? thats what mine is doing. I replaced the steering box already so I thinking mine is in the U-joints in the steereing linkage. or maybe now the sway bar links. that would have never crossed my mind.

Check your track bar also, if they are bad they will pop when you turn, check the track bar with the wheels on the ground, have someone shake the steering wheel while you watch the ball joint on the upper end of the track bar, it should have no movement
