Default steering issue, should be easy to answer, im a noob

When i make turns left or right when at any speed below 30 my steering wheel hops and wants to turn for me... it acts as if my tires are at 5psi but they are actually at 35.. my xj is stock, hurts to say it but i know you guys know your stuff...help!

is it in 4wd cause that will make it do that on pavment

or dos your jeep have a front locker if not sounds like a bad u joint

time to check all the front end parts u-joints ball joints steering box for play tie-rods,alignment and trac bar for play

I agree start at the wheels and work your way in to the steering box

The one question not asked is whether or not these vehicles have full time 4WD. If the fluid coupling is getting worn out, it will tend to be almost locked up and will act like part time 4WD in sharp corners.

i hate that im a motorcycle mechanic yet my knowledge of cars is that of a 10 year old...damn it i guess ill take it into the shop. another sentence you guys probably dont want to hear. thanks!!!

the lever may not look engaged but your linkage may be. crawl under and push the linkage on the tc to make sure its clicked fully in 2wd

This is the issue I had with mine. went out to the jy and picked up a linkage with the adjuster on it. Works fine now

My advice is to take it to a field put it in 4wd drive it around a bit then put it back in 2wd. Sometimes the tcase gets jammed up if youtry and switch from 4 to 2wd on a hard surface.

Sounds like it's stuck in 4wd....like the guys said, check the linkage underneath......if you only feel it on dry, paved roads and not loose gravel, sand, mud, etc. it's a good bet the linkage is gone/rotted. Hope this helps.
