Steering Gear Box Question
Searched for about twenty minutes on this subject before posting, sorry if its already been adressed.
Jeep is 89 comanche pioneer 4.0l with the saginaw steering box
My steering box seal(s) has blown out. Moved it last week without it running, trans was out for clutch job. Had to crank the wheel pretty hard once to turn it and it spurted fluid. I saw a small drip, didnt concern me. Though I maybe spilled something and it ran off. Didnt leak for a week after I fixed the clutch and drove it a bunch.
Yesterday I walked out to see a 12" x 12" drip spot on the ground. I traced it to the Steering gear box. Priced the seal kit and researched procedure. Looks pretty simple.
The one question I still have, after reading, is it ok to drive it as is? I have no money to fix it for a week, and its my daily driver at the moment.
thanks,
james

Because the system is hydraulic I'd have to assume it not beneficial for the gears. I got a new seal for my steering gear for $35 bucks from the dealer.
I get the feeling a new box would be slightly more expensive.
If you have no option in the matter, do your best to keep the fluid topped off until the repair is possible. Hopefully nothing will be harmed.
