Would a steering column without an airbag swap directly into a '96? If not what has to be changed. I hate the airbag wheel and I don't want to hear reasons for keeping it either.

Really? good to know I always thought i could go to Auto Zone or Pep Boys and pick up one of those Grant GT steering wheels and put it on because I saw one I liked. But knowing this now, hmm wonder why they sell them if we cannot put them on? The box should warn you not to do this? I guess its okay to do on an 88 XJ which is pre-air bag but when did that get introduced in the wheel? My 96 wheel does not say air bag so I am not too sure if I have one inside the wheel. Confused, yes, but thanks for that heads up info!

But I have to add my 2cents regarding airbags. Don't remove them. Despite the legal implications, you're removing an important safety device. Less critical, but worth noting, the vehicle becomes nearly worthless to anyone else unless it's a parts vehicle. Why not just replace the column with a correct part? These things are not so rare that you can't find one.

Nice use of sarcasm, kid. I use it liberally in many of my posts. But I have to add my 2cents regarding airbags. Don't remove them. Oh, and parts stores sell those Grant wheels because not every vehicle that is still on the road has an airbag.

The 95-96 XJ use a different column from the 84-94 and 97-01. I think he wants to do away with the bulky looking airbag wheel and something nicer looking. But I agree, don't tamper or remove any type of restraint system.

Yea the main reason I wanted to replace it is cause the wheel isn't far from having the leathery like wrap rub through plus I like the way the old factory 3 spoke wheels look and feel better. Sounds like I just have to deal with it. Which brings me to my next question. How hard is the steering wheel to replace with another like whats on it? Surely you don't have to replace the whole column to replace the wheel?

They also sell those red or blue tracer lights that people stick on the front of their cars, which is extremely illegal.
The key phrase found on the packaging of any of these products that allows them to get away with selling them is "Not For Highway Use" or "For Off-Road Use Only" Meaning basically if you install and use said product on a vehicle that is driven on public streets, you assume any legal risks if it violates a law or traffic code.
Bottom line: they don't care, they have your money.

Hi I am also interested in doing the swap from a 95 column to a 94 column... the reason is this, for safety.
That may sound strange but hear are my reasons... ive been in two wrecks with a first gen Chrysler airbag and both times the bag failed to work properly, the first time it went off as i was trying to get out, the second time it went off while driving. I am a fan of airbags, had my life saved by one in a Volvo 240. But I am not going to be injured by a Chrysler bag going off again... i have heard and read many horror stories of temperamental air bags in Chryslers. My wife is 5'-4" and pulls the seat way forward and with 240k I am not putting my wifes life in sub-standard technology that is more likely a hazard because of how it was rushed into production. Please do not flood this with reason why i shouldnt, my mind is set from my experiences
Okay with that rant over I had a 94 2-door that succomed to frame rot and found another 95 2-door that is clean... the cruise worked in my 94 and doesnt in the 95. I plan on keeping this 95 jeep forever and if the connectors dont match up can they be rewired to do so. I would imagine they can as i need cruise contol as i have a problem with my legs and need it to drive distances
