steering box shaft...
thats what my steering box looked like and it would seem that thats where im getting loose steering from...whats the fix? or do i gotta replace the gear box again?
whats the prevention? i know they sell steering box braces, but i reqally dont see how this can be prevented by a brace that only grabs the upper part of the box...

The sector shaft bearing is worn out. If there is indeed a bearing...some Chrysler boxes don't use one,and once they wear they can't be properly rebuilt without boring and installing needle bearings. Sleeves that most rebuilders use don't last long.
Prevention is not using iffy remanufactured boxes.
Problem is all the remanufactured boxes are iffy unless you shell out the cash for a red-head.

not sure what a red-head is..is it a brand?
well then....i guess if when i replace if i go with a durango box will it stop this from happening? i dont really wanna go big bucks considering im saving up for my other xj project, but for a reasonable price what can i go with that will eliminate this from happening again?
again, cheap meaning not something from psc, or any ram assist, too much money(putting full hydro or ram assist on my other project)

The durango box is also a bushing box, not bearing. It'll eventually have the same problem. I've never done the swap, but see others have and appear to consider it an upgrade.

just got this email from red-head
thats not a bad price at all
We do have the 99 Durango box in stock. However, I prefer the gearbox that comes on the Cherokee (well I should say, on some of them). All Durango's come with only a single seal at the output shaft bore. We only use the Cherokee housings that will accept the double seal, just because there is much less of a problem with leakage. Cost is $236 exchange
